Case Study

Completing an AI-powered assessment platform for educators

We took an early Lovable prototype and built it into a complete, production-ready platform — educator and student portals, AI question generation, automated marksheet evaluation, grading, and a gamified coin-reward system.

Overview

Hillcrestlogic AI (an NYClogic AI product) is an AI-powered teaching and assessment platform for K-12 educators, aligned to New York State (NYS) Regents standards. The founder had built an early prototype with Lovable; VanceIQ took over and carried it through to a complete, production-ready product spanning two connected experiences — an educator and admin app (thescangeniusapp.com) and a gamified student rewards portal, “Scholar Quest” (thescanscholar.com). We built out the full feature set: AI-generated assessments, automated paper scanning and evaluation, a standards-aligned grading system, student analytics, and an XP/coin rewards economy — wired together with AI API integrations and FERPA-conscious data handling.

The challenge

What we set out to solve

  • Take an early no-code (Lovable) prototype and turn it into a complete, production-ready platform — without losing the founder's original vision.
  • Build two connected experiences — an educator/admin portal and a gamified student portal — that share student data cleanly.
  • Integrate AI into real teaching workflows: generating standards-aligned questions and worksheets, and reliably evaluating scanned student work.
  • Stay aligned to NYS Regents standards and keep student-data handling FERPA-conscious.

Our approach

How we built it

We took over the Lovable prototype, hardened the foundation, and built the architecture a real product needs — authentication, role-based portals (admin/teacher, student, parent), and clean data flow between them.

We integrated AI APIs for the core workflows: topic selection and question/worksheet generation aligned to NYS standards, and an evaluation agent that scores scanned answer sheets.

We built the assessment and grading systems — a searchable question bank, adaptive worksheets, scan import with auto-rotation and answer keys, and custom NYS-aligned grading rubrics.

We designed the gamified rewards economy — XP, coins, streaks, badges, and parent reward pledges — and connected it to student performance so real progress drives the rewards.

What we delivered

Highlights of the build

Educator & admin portal

A full teacher and admin workspace — dashboard, class and student management, lesson plans, and quick actions for assessments, scanning, and reports.

Gamified student portal

“Scholar Quest” — a student experience where learners earn XP, coins, streaks, and badges for completing work and mastering standards.

AI question & worksheet generation

Topic selection mapped to NYS standards, with AI-generated questions, adaptive worksheets, and a searchable question bank.

Marksheet evaluation agent

Scan paper answer sheets — with auto-rotation and answer keys — and let an AI agent evaluate and score student work.

Standards-aligned grading

Custom grading rubrics calibrated to the NYS Regents 0–4 scale, with passing thresholds and misconception tagging.

Coin & rewards economy

XP and coins for assignments, mastery, and streaks; behaviour-based deductions for teachers; and real-world reward pledges parents can set.

Student mastery & improvement

Per-student and per-topic mastery tracking that surfaces each learner's strengths and the areas they need to improve.

Reports & analytics

Class and student performance analytics — averages, topics tracked, and work analyzed — shared between the teaching app and the rewards system.

AI integration, FERPA-conscious

AI APIs wired throughout for generation and evaluation, with student data handled in a FERPA-conscious way.

FAQ

Common questions

What did VanceIQ do for this platform?

The founder had built an early prototype with Lovable. We took it over and completed it into a production-ready platform — building out the educator/admin and student portals, AI question and worksheet generation, an AI marksheet-evaluation agent, a standards-aligned grading system, analytics, and a gamified XP/coin rewards economy.

How is AI used in the platform?

AI APIs power two core workflows: generating NYS-standards-aligned questions and worksheets from a selected topic, and evaluating scanned student answer sheets to assist grading. Student data is handled in a FERPA-conscious way.

What are the student and admin portals?

Educators and admins get a workspace for classes, assessments, scanning, grading, a teacher library, and reports. Students get “Scholar Quest” — a gamified portal where they earn XP, coins, streaks, and badges as they complete work and master standards.

Was the platform built from scratch?

No — we took over an existing Lovable prototype and carried it through to a complete production platform rather than starting over, preserving the founder's vision while giving it the architecture, AI integrations, and features a real product needs.
